Each year the city dynamites the ice to stop the flooding of the Rideau River in the spring. This year they started on Saturday, February 28th. It was scheduled to start at 7AM but it was so cold (less than -30 with the wind chill) that they took hours getting the lift gates open at the Rideau Falls to allow the broken ice to pass through.
I was there at 6:30am (the first three pictures) and then back again at 2:30pm or so. Fellow photographer Thom Fountain had given me the heads up and I met him there in the afternoon. We had a ball!
