The Spirit of Rasputin's organization is doing many things to support folk music in the Ottawa area. I can't make it to all of them but I'll put my pictures here when I do make it. So far there's an Open Mike night on Mondays, a jam on Tuesdays, a monthly CKCU Weekend Wrap-Up, a monthly Rasputin's Beard where 4 bands get an open stage and a twice monthly concert series, all at the Elmdale House Tavern on Wellington St.
May 2nd, 2010, Sunday Concert - Terry Gillespie and Terry Owen with Jeffery Grosvenor

For pictures see my Terry Gillespie page.
April 25th, 2010, Rasputin's Beard

Julie Element and the Elementals
I had to cover the Acoustic Waves concert down the street so I was only able to catch the first of the four bands - The Elementals. They were great!
April 18th, 2010, Sunday Concert - Andy Mason, Ian Tamblyn with Fred Guignon

Ian & Fred
Andy Mason opened for Ian Tamblyn at the SoR Sunday Concert. It was a great night! I'm loving these concerts, especially when the performers have a connection to Rasputin's. Ian took the connection as a reason to revisit his old catalog. He attempted to make his way from his beginning to present but ran out of time around, hmmm, 2000 or so. Maybe he can come back and finish the tour?
April 11th, 2010, CKCU Weekend Wrap-Up - Al Wood with Lindsay Pugh

Al & Lindsay backing up Brian Harris
Al has a unique way of singing & playing the harmonica - and he wore the best shirt I've seen for a while! It was a great night of music but very lightly attended. Where are you folk/blues/roots music fans on a Sunday night?
April 7th & 8th, 2010, SoR and Writer's Block present: The Great Canadian Song Along

Tony Turner presenting Tom Lipps
For two nights Writer's Block, a song-writing collective, presented their members singing two songs each. I wasn't able to be there for the whole thing but what I heard was amazing!
April 4th, 2010, Sunday Concert - Emily Fennell and Lindsay Ferguson

Two singer-songwriters, Emily Fennell and Lindsay Ferguson, filled the night with songs of strong emotion and beautiful tone.
March 28th, 2010, The first Rasputin's Beard - An open stage for bands

Hurry Up & Wait
There were four bands signed up, "Hurry Up & Wait", "Hank's Hangover", "Shady Blue" and "One Big Smile". It was one wild evening, climaxed when the inmates from "One Big Smile" took over the building.
March 22nd, 2010, Monday Open Mic

The Monday open mic have gotten crowded, both with performers and cameras! I had to leave at 10 pm and they were just breaking before the fifth set!
March 21st, 2010, Sunday Concert - Chris MacLean

Chris MacLean with a hot band, consisting of Fred Guignon on guitars, Stuart Watkins on bass and Beth Cahill on vocals and mandolin. The night started with Beth doing a couple of her own songs with Chris adding vocal backup then into the full band with Chris presenting mainly songs from her recent "Feet Be Still" album.
March 14th, 2010, CKCU Weekend Wrap-Up - JP Ranger

I stopped by on my way to Acoustic Waves at GCTC. A hot band!
March 7th, 2010, Sunday Concert

Michael Ball and Jody Benjamin teamed up Mary Gick for a set and then joined Michael Jerome Browne for his music.
March 2nd, 2010, Tuesday Jam Session

I dropped in mainly to get the picture. They were doing a song circle and, within each song, a solo circle.
February 28th, 2010, Sunday Concert

Missy Burgess did a great concert with Keith Glass, despite her having the flu! The place was packed.
February 21st, 2010, Sunday Concert

Mike O'Reilly & Peter Dawson came to the Elmdale for the Sunday night concert this week. The band consisted of Mike O'Reilly (guitar & vocals), Peter Dawson (fiddle), Gilles Leclerc (mandolin & guitar) and Don Patterson (bass). I couldn't hang around for long because of the Canada - US hockey game but what I heard was great.
February 14th, 2010 The first CKCU Weekend Wrap-Up!

Pat Moore, one of the roots collective that hosts CKCU's Saturday Morning show, sat down with John Carroll for a short interview before he sang his songs. It was great! (again!)
February 7th, 2010 The first Sunday Concert!

Lynn Miles played with Keith Glass accompanying. A GREAT concert, one of the best I've been to in the last few years. Keith was a surprise for me. I last saw him about 10 years ago at Blue Skies and had been looking forward to his playing with Missy on the 28th but HERE HE WAS. It was so much fun, Lynn's music and recollections of Rasputin's and the "Lynn & Keith Comedy Hour"!
January 22, 2010
Bob Nesbitt had one of his famous BBQs for the volunteers of Spirit of Rasputins.
January 18, 2010 - Monday night Open Stage
I could only stay for a little while but caught Missy getting ready as I left.
November 30, 2009 - Monday night Open Stage
November 9, 2009
The Spirit of Rasputin's organization is doing many things to support folk music in the Ottawa area. The Monday Open Stage at The Elmdale House Tavern this week is the first I've been to.
I think I got a picture of everyone who played and, if so, there were 14. They showed a wonderful blend of their own songs and a few covers. The audience was mainly the players with a dozen or so of us non-players (I play my camera, thank you!).
I'm afraid I didn't take notes and so don't have people's names here yet. Sjef Frenken is going to help me but, if you don't see your name appearing under the picture please send me a note at Jake@WithFlare.org and I'll fix it up.
